We are happy to announce that Kone Foundation has granted funding for the ‘Against the stream of manhood’ project for 2026–2027.

The research project Mieheyden valtavirtaan – Nuorten miesten ulkopuolisuuden ja sukupuolinormien neuvottelu verkkoyhteisöissä (Against the stream of manhood – Young men’s negotiation of outsiderhood and gender norms in online communities), lead by docent, Academy Research Fellow Mikko Meriläinen explores discussions of manhood and masculinity in young men’s geek communities, misogynist incel communities, and the Finnish Ylilauta image board. The members of these communities are largely young men who often view themselves as being outside the mainstream; the communities are also often associated with gendered stereotypes, for example about childishness and a lack of social skills.

The groups, however, differ in how they relate to non-normative manhood ideals. In geek and gaming communities, not fitting traditional ideals is often a source of pride, whereas in incel communities it becomes bitterness and hopelesness. Incel communities are especially know for their misogyny, which has also been connected to lethal violent attacks.

The central question the project explores is why the experience of not fitting norms becomes bitterness and hatred in one group, yet turns into empowering pride over one’s unique identity in another. The study helps us understand what kind of group features may either protect young men from violent and misogynistic views, or offer these views fertile soil to grow in.

In addition to academic publications, the project produces material for professionals working with young people.

The project team includes PI Mikko Meriläinen (Tampere University), Aasa Timonen (Tampere University), Emilia Lounela (University of Helsinki), and Maria Ruotsalainen (University of Jyväskylä).
