Tampere University Game Research Lab offers courses and entire degrees that provide opportunities to specialise in game studies.
Our students are trained to become game experts, specialist who understand how games and play are created, how they function, and what is their role in culture and society.
Bachelor level
On the bachelor level, game studies is part of the media studies orientation in the multidisciplinary communication studies. The bachelor is a Finnish-language programme, and can be applied through joint application system in Spring (kevään toinen yhteishaku).
Master’s level
On master’s level, we offer a full English-language, intern Game Studies master’s degree programme. You can apply to the programme after an applicable bachelor’s degree. The application period is once a year around December. The bachelors from our media studies orientation can choose the master’s programme directly.
Doctoral level
Interested in doctoral studies? In our university, game studies is included in the Doctoral Programme in Media, Communication and Performing Arts (DPMCP). The game studies orientation focuses on critical and societal research on players, game experiences, game cultures, and game production, as well as game analysis methods. Application period is open twice a year, in April and in October. Note that before applying, the applicant needs to have agreed about the PhD project with a supervisor – please contact possible supervisors well in advance before applying.
